In 1950, Paramount blew up the box office with "Samson and Delilah" (1949), grossing 11 million dollars - more than double that of its successor. Fox made no secret of its intentions and adapted another passage from the Bible. The result: barely remembered today, "David and Bathsheba" was also the most successful film of its year - it achieved 7 million dollars at the box office - more than "An American in Paris" or "A Streetcar Named Desire"
