Harry Steele (Charlton Heston) and the opportunist Ed Morgan (Thomas Mitchell) arrive in Peru attracted by the legend of the gold of the Incas. According to that legend, the empire of the Incas was destroyed by the gods when the fabulous sacred treasure of gold and precious stones was stolen from the Temple of the Sun, several centuries ago, and which is preserved in the tomb of Manco. Harry has a fragment of an ancient stone map that indicates the location of the tomb. Wanting to anticipate Ed Morgan, he seizes the private plane of the Romanian consul and goes with Elena Antonescu (Nicole Maurey) to Machu Picchu, in search of the treasure.
