Richard Harland (Cornel Wilde), a young writer, meets Ellen Berent (Gene Tierney) on a train, a beautiful woman whom he marries a few days later. Life seems to smile at them, but Ellen is so possessive and her jealousy is so sick that she is not willing to share Richard with anyone; Both friends and family of hers represent a threat to her that she will try to get rid of, causing the misfortune of those around them.
