Ahasuerus, king of the Persian empire, returns from a battle against the Egyptians to discover that he has been betrayed by his wife. Feigning loyalty to the monarch, Haman, his prime minister, advises him to choose a new queen. Among the candidates is Esther, a young Jewish woman who is about to marry a soldier loyal to Ahasuerus.
