In 1840 in the Florida Keys there is work for honest rescuers (like the Claibornes) and pirates like King Cutler, who wrecks schooners to seize the cargo. When Captain Stuart's ship is shipwrecked, Loxi Claiborne rescues him and travels with him to Charleston to prove to the cargo's owners that the shipwreck was not premeditated.
